Abstract: "Una modesta proposta" (1729), la più celebre satira in lingua inglese, fu composta da Jonathan Swift a sessantadue anni ma con il medesimo spirito provocatorio e politicamente scorretto dei suoi scritti giovanili. Questa volta a scuotere la "furibonda indignazione" dello scrittore satirico più scomodo del '700 sono le intollerabili condizioni di miseria in cui versa l'Irlanda a causa dello sfruttamento colonialista dei governanti inglesi. Con il linguaggio impassibile dei teorici dell'utilitarismo, l'anonimo autore del pamphlet propone la soluzione economicamente più vantaggiosa per capitalizzare la prolificità degli irlandesi: mettere in vendita i loro figli più grassi che, cucinati in vario modo, forniranno squisite pietanze ai ricchi. Si combatteranno così anche sovrappopolazione e disoccupazione, mentre i più poveri risparmieranno, contribuendo altresì al benessere economico dell'intera nazione. I connazionali capirono perfettamente che il brutale sarcasmo non era diretto contro i derelitti e i mendicanti che riempivano le strade di Dublino, ma contro i politici inglesi e la loro spietata logica del profitto, e acclamarono Swift come patriota. Accomunato alla grande tradizione dissacratoria di Rabelais e Voltaire, questo classico della letteratura satirica imbastisce una parodia sconcertante e paradossale sull'iniquità delle discriminazioni sociali e sull'asservimento dell'etica al sistema economico.
