Torres del Paine : trekking in Chile's premier National Park and Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park / by Rudolph Abraham

Milnthorpe : Cicerone, 2013

Abstract: The Torres del Paine Circuit is a 140km journey using clear and well marked paths that link a comprehensive network of huts and campsites. Taking approximately 10-11 days to complete, it reaches its highest point at 1180m and offers beautiful views in every direction. The guide emphasises low-impact trekking, and has detailed route descriptions and full background and planning information. Torres del Paine has been a national park since 1959 and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978, and is home to some of South America's most iconic sights. Its immense landscape is filled with awe-inspiring mountains, beautifully unspoilt forests and emerald-coloured lakes. It is bordered on the west by isolated fjords and on the east by seemingly endless steppe, and it sits on the edge of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field - the largest sheet of ice in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica. Transport to and within the park is simple and, with minimal elevation gain for most stages, none of the routes described are difficult. Other routes include 2-day treks in Laguna Verde, Rio Pingo and Laguna Azul.

Hiking and biking Peru's Inca trails / by KB (Will) Janaceck

Milnthorpe : Cicerone, 2013

Abstract: This handy guidebook to hiking and mountainbiking in Peru's Sacred Valley describes 40 routes, some previously unpublished, right across the Valley, visiting all the major Incan sites so far uncovered from Cusco, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo, Vilcabamba and in the remote region around spectacular Mt. Ausangate, 100km south east of Cusco. It also includes seven different ways to trek to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, including the famous Inca Trail. Most routes can be done on foot or by mountainbike and timings are given for each, as well as advice on whether it is preferable to undertake a particular route with a local guide or trekking agency, in the less well-known areas. The Andes are the second highest mountain range in the world, after the Himalaya, but they have the most spectacular range of altitude - from 6000m down to just above sea level - making for some thrilling MTB descents on ancient Incan roads. The area also has a spectacular collection of ancient Incan sites, with new sites yet to be uncovered, and is still farmed by the direct descendants of the Incas, often seen in their colourful traditional dress in the local villages.
