Fano : Aras, 2022
Abstract: This book aims at investigating the evolution of English culture and literature in the contemporary society through a Cultural Studies perspective devoted to the analysis of literary texts, pop music, TV shows and series, comics, videogames, and advertisements. The book’s approach denounces the use of arbitrary definitions in terms of class, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality in a post-modern society, as well as any kind of cultural and identity discrimination. In this context, the Cultural Studies perspective makes popular culture a liberating practice in which meaning is not imposed but continually negotiated. Similarly, the current post-modern, post-national, and post-human society creates new paradigms and forms of cultural exchange and debate.

Abstract: Slow East Devon and the Jurassic Coast is the most comprehensive - and only standalone - guide available to this region. Publication is timed to coincide with the opening of the Seaton Jurassic Visitor Centre. The guide includes best bus-assisted walks along the Jurassic Coast and insider knowledge which can only be gained by living in the area. Colourful and witty writing combined with the authors' enthusiasm for the area make this guide as much a pleasure to read as it is a useful companion for exploring. Included are the Dorset towns of Lyme Regis and Charmouth, brief descriptions of other coastal Dorset towns on the Jurassic Coast bus route as well as a detailed description of the geology of the entire Jurassic Coast. With an emphasis on car-free travel - walking, cycling and local buses - the detailed descriptions, historical and folk anecdotes, and personal accounts encourage visitors to explore each locale thoroughly and really get under its skin. Hand-picked places to eat and drink are selected by the authors based upon long-standing knowledge of the area, in consultation with local residents.
1939 : the last season / Anne de Courcy
London : Orion, 2009
Abstract: The Season of 1939 brought all those 'in Society' to London. The young debutante daughters of the upper classes were presented to the King and Queen to mark their acceptance into the new adult world of their parents. They sparkled their way through a succession of balls and parties and sporting events. The Season brought together influential people not only from Society but also from Government at the various events of the social calendar. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain chaperoned his debutante niece to weekend house parties; Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, lunched with the Headmaster of Eton; Cabinet Ministers encountered foreign Ambassadors at balls in the houses of the great hostesses. As the hot summer drew on, the newspapers filled with ever more ominous reports of the relentless progress towards war. There was nothing to do but wait - and dance. The last season of peace was nearly over.
