Abstract: One of the most creative minds of the 20th century, Walt Disney created a unique and unrivaled imaginative universe. Like scarcely any other classics of cinema, his astonishing collection of animated cartoons revolutionized storytelling on screen and enchant to this day across geographies and generations. In TASCHEN's first volume of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on Disney animation, some 1,500 images and essays by eminent Disney experts take us to the beating heart of the studio's "Golden Age of Animation." This landmark book traces Disney's complete animation journey from the silent film era, through his first full-length feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the pioneering artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), right up to his last masterpieces Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) and The Jungle Book (1967). With extensive research conducted through the historical collections of the Walt Disney Company, as well as private collections, editor Daniel Kothenschulte curates some of the most precious concept paintings and storyboards to reveal just how these animation masterpieces came to life. Masterful cel setups provide highly detailed illustrations of famous film scenes while rare pictures taken by Disney photographers and excerpts from story conferences between Walt and his staff bring a privileged insider's view to the studio's creative process.

Firstenberg, Arthur

The invisible rainbow : a history of electricity and life / Arthur Firstenberg

White River Junction : Chelsea Green Publishing, 2020

Abstract: Over the last 220 years, society has evolved a universal belief that electricity is ‘safe’ for humanity and the planet. Scientist and journalist Arthur Firstenberg disrupts this conviction by telling the story of electricity in a way it has never been told before―from an environmental point of view―by detailing the effects that this fundamental societal building block has had on our health and our planet. In The Invisible Rainbow, Firstenberg traces the history of electricity from the early eighteenth century to the present, making a compelling case that many environmental problems, as well as the major diseases of industrialized civilization―heart disease, diabetes, and cancer―are related to electrical pollution.

Milano : Mondadori università, 2019

Abstract: Questo manuale, interamente scritto in lingua inglese, offre una storia della Letteratura inglese tanto affidabile scientificamente quanto accessibile agli studenti italiani.

Milano : Feltrinelli, 2019

Abstract: Tre secoli fa, il 1703, nasceva San Pietroburgo.

Unsolved! : the history and mystery of the world's greatest ciphers from ancient Egypt to online secret societies / Craig P. Bauer

Princeton : Princeton University Press, [2017]

Abstract: In 1953, a man was found dead from cyanide poisoning near the Philadelphia airport with a picture of a Nazi aircraft in his wallet. Taped to his abdomen was an enciphered message. In 1912, a book dealer named Wilfrid Voynich came into possession of an illuminated cipher manuscript once belonging to Emperor Rudolf II, who was obsessed with alchemy and the occult. Wartime codebreakers tried--and failed--to unlock the book's secrets, and it remains an enigma to this day. In this lively and entertaining book, Craig Bauer examines these and other vexing ciphers yet to be cracked. Some may reveal the identity of a spy or serial killer, provide the location of buried treasure, or expose a secret society--while others may be elaborate hoaxes. Unsolved! begins by explaining the basics of cryptology, and then explores the history behind an array of unsolved ciphers. It looks at ancient ciphers, ciphers created by artists and composers, ciphers left by killers and victims, Cold War ciphers, and many others. Some are infamous, like the ciphers in the Zodiac letters, while others were created purely as intellectual challenges by figures such as Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard P. Feynman. Bauer lays out the evidence surrounding each cipher, describes the efforts of geniuses and eccentrics--in some cases both--to decipher it, and invites readers to try their hand at puzzles that have stymied so many others. Unsolved! takes readers from the ancient world to the digital age, providing an amazing tour of many of history's greatest unsolved ciphers"

Mother tongue : the story of the English language / Bill Bryson

London : Penguin Books, 2009

English literature in context / Paul Poplawski, general editor

2. ed.

Cambridge [etc.] : Cambridge University Press, 2017

Ridley, Ronald T.

Rome : twenty-nine centuries : a chronological guide / Ronald T. Ridley

Roma : Gangemi international, 2017

Abstract: The purpose of this ‘guide' is simple. It is to illustrate the incredible history of Rome, now approaching the end of its third millennium. It is also to provide a new kind of ‘guide', illustrating that history. There are many splendid guides to Rome. These guides all follow the same arrangement: the city divided into areas, modelled on the rioni (wards), in order to plan ‘walks'. This is the only rational way that one could explore the city. My intention is to illustrate Rome's history, which requires a totally different organisation. This guide is divided into centuries, giving some indication of what can still be visited, observed, and studied of the city's history over all these centuries. And, incredible to say, there is still something from every century, but a glance at the chapters will show the, not unexpected, very uneven scale of survival. The main value is obviously that one can explore any century which holds special interest.

Zagato : masterpieces of style / texts edited by Luciano Greggio ; in collaboration with Alvise-Marco Seno

Vimodrone : Nada, 2017

Vespa : the complete history from 1946 / [Giorgio Sarti]

Ed. inglese

Vimodrone : Nada, 2016

Brick / edited by William Hall ; essay by Dan Cruickshank

[London] : Phaidon, 2015

Abstract: A fresh, insightful and surprising look at one of the world’s most versatile and popular architectural building materials, Brick explores the beauty of brick through 169 structures dating from 2,100 BC to the present day. Showcasing extraordinary early structures, such as the strange remains of the Ziggurat of Ur (2,100 BC) and the vast Baths of Caracalla in Rome (216 AD), Brick also features works by some of the most celebrated architects of the twentieth century, such as Alvar Aalto, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Equally striking and memorable projects are featured by innovators working in the twenty-first century, such as Frank Gehry, Peter Zumthor, Kazuyo Sejima, and many lesser-known newcomers. Arranged to promote comparison and discussion, the selected projects take you on a global tour of intriguing and inspiring structures: an American arts centre sits next to an English castle, a French war memorial is shown alongside a Russian cathedral, and a Uruguayan church next to a school in Burkina Faso. Illustrated with extraordinary photographs, each project includes an extended caption providing a commentary on the building, while an essay by the historian and BBC television presenter Dan Cruickshank sketches the fascinating history of this enduring building material. Following the popularity and format of Concrete (William Hall, 2012), Brick is a beautiful and informative visual exploration of a material that is often overlooked, and sometimes considered limiting, but is actually full of spectacular potential.
