Sono le due polarità geografiche e la maturazione della protagonista a fornire i temi cardine del romanzo, capolavoro della letteratura vittoriana: Margaret, trasferitasi da Helstone, fiabesco villaggio del Sud, a Milton-Northern, popolosa città manifatturiera del Nord, si trova bruscamente immessa nel mondo nuovo, e per molti aspetti irriconoscibile, prodotto dall’industrializzazione. La famiglia Hale, che coltiva valori tradizionali, è totalmente estranea alla frenetica vita del centro industriale in piena espansione, alla nascente lotta di classe fra padroni e operai, all’inquinamento e al degrado sociale.
